John Joe O’Reilly Mug
John Joe O’Reilly was a famous Gaelic footballer who captained the 1947 Cavan senior team to victory.He was born in Killeshandra, County Cavan in 1919.His local club was Cornafean.He captained the Cavan team which won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championships in 1947 at the New York City Polo Grounds.
The famous match was played on the 4th September 1947,the final result was Kerry 2-07 and Cavan 2-11.The song “The Gallant John Joe” was written by Peter Albert McGovern from Swanlinbar in Cavan, Ireland, this was as a tribute to John Joe O’ Reilly.
