William McCracken, a skilled designer and welder from Raphoe in Donegal, creates handcrafted weathervanes that blend functionality with artistic flair. Each weathervane is meticulously made from mild steel, typically measuring around 700mm in width and 1m in height, although the exact dimensions may vary depending on the chosen top design.
The construction process includes full galvanization of the weathervanes to protect them against rust and weather damage. After galvanization, they are sprayed with a durable two-pack paint, which not only provides an extra layer of protection but also allows for vibrant, eye-catching colors. This ensures that the weathervanes are both robust and visually appealing.
The top part of the weathervane, often featuring unique and custom designs, pivots on a 10mm bearing ball. This mechanism allows the weathervane to rotate smoothly and accurately indicate wind direction.
